This is my review of Rose Hip Vital Canine powder. When I was still a puppy and going for my routine vet checks, it was pointed out that I have a slight luxating patella. A luxating patella occurs when the dog patella (kneecap), which normally sits on the groove of the femur (thighbone), shifts out of alignment. It’s quite a common trait in Westies and seems to be hereditary. I know at least one of my brothers has it too.
What is Rose-Hip Vital Canine?
As per the website, Rose-Hip Vital® Canine is a scientifically and clinically tested natural anti-inflammatory, powerful antioxidant and rich source of natural vitamin C. Made from pure and natural Rosehips manufactured with patented processes, it’s a plant-based anti-inflammatory and immune system support for your dog’s joint health and general wellbeing.
Rose-Hip Vital® Canine is scientifically proven to reduce inflammation, protect cartilage, improve general health and improve performance.
I became aware of it through my fellow Westie friends on the SG Westies Facebook Group. It was very highly recommended as a supplement to take for Westies who have a luxating patella. At first, when I saw the price I was a little put off. At S$139.90 for 500ml of powder it’s quite expensive. However, it did come really highly recommended so I thought I would give it a go.
If you sign up for their newsletter or follow their Facebook page they quite often have special promotions. Usually these will be buy one get one free or buy 2 for a special price. I always wait until a special offer comes around before buying as it can save quite a lot. I’m not really sure if anyone ever buys it at full price!
Does it Work?
It’s quite hard to say if it has actually worked for me. Since I didn’t really suffer from any pain or limp with my luxating patella there was no improvements to be seen from taking it. However, in the 5 years I’ve been taking it, it hasn’t got any worse. So that has to be a good thing right?
As mine wasn’t a high grade category the recommendatios from vets is to take supplements to support joint health. Of course there’s no point doing any surgery unless I am in significant pain, which I am not. My supplement of choice is Rose-Hip Vital Canine and I have been happy with it so far.
Any drawbacks?
To me, there are 2 main drawbacks to this particular brand.
- The powder is an orange powder. When mixed with the food of a white dog, this ends up in a brown muzzle. A lot of fellow Westie owners I know will religiously clean their dogs muzzle straight after eating with a wet cloth to stop the staining. my pawrents actually think my brown mnuzzle gives me a bit more character so aren’t as religious in scrubbing me down after every meal.
- I am unsure of the availability of this brand outside of Singapore and Australia. Since moving to Thailand it’s not possible to get it here and the distributors in Singapore will not ship here either. Last time I ordered I had to order to a friend in Singapore who then sent to me by post. This attracted another customs fee upon arrival which adds even further to the already expensive cost. As I will be moving again in the future I worry that I will eventually find it too difficult to source. As far as my searches tell me, it’s not readily available in Japan, Europe or the UK which are likely places I will travel too. So unless I make a trip to Singapore before I go and buy in bulk I may have to find an alternative. Unless I become a distributor myself, what do you think guys 😉

All of my views expressed here are my own and I don’t get any kickback from Rose Hip at all. But if you do want to support me, head to my shop to buy one of my cool Hawaiian shirts!
That’s all for now. Woof woof, Wylie x
