We did the River Oich walk during our stay in Fort Augustus. The total walk itself was 3.75 miles and was a circular trip. I much prefer to do circular walks as it means you don’t have to walk back on yourself and get to see more scenery.
We took the car from Fort Augustus to the River Oich car park. Whilst it could have been walked to from the town, it would have added another 20 minutes each way onto the walk. So we took the car and it was a much better choice. Otherwise we would have been walking along the road and not so pleasant.
The walk started from the car park and was clearly sign posted. It started with a short walk through the forest and worked its way down to the river. From there we walked along the river for quite some time, which was really peaceful. We bumped into a beautiful black dog out for his walkies and I got to have a big of play time with him too which was great fun.

We got to the end of the riverside walk where the river was flowing pretty strongly. The track then took us in through the forest and it became a forest walk. There was still a small river running through the forest and it was really pretty. Before long we were onto a dirt track that trucks were driving down that were doing some construction in the area so that part wasn’t so great. It didn’t last too long though. We then crossed through a field and before we knew it we were back at the car park.
In total it took about 2 hours to do the whole 3.75 mile walk. Thankfully the weather stayed dry the whole time.
