La Coppolla is an Italian restaurant in the South of Samui in Thong Krut area. This is where most of the longtail boats leave to go to nearby Koh Madsum, also known as Pig Island (due to the pigs that live on the island). There used to be a lot of good fish restuarants in this area, although it seems that most have closed down now due to covid. We had actually planned to go to Hemmingway’s, which was a very popular restaurant, although we were sad to see it, too had closed down. We therefore stumbled across La Coppolla.
The restaurant is located overlooking the fishing boats which is very picturesque. You also have nice views of Koh Madsum in the distance.
When we went in the lady didn’t seem overly keen to see me but she let us in and we chose a table as far away as possible. Which was good as it meant we got one right on the beach. The restaurant itself is designed like a Thai restaurant, with bamboo huts and wooden tables and chairs. So it feels a bit on the cheap side.
Even though the restaurant is an Italian one, they had 2 menus. One for Italian food and the other for Thai food. But who comes to an Italian and orders Thai food? So we opted to go for Italian. Even though it was only lunch time, my pawrents were hungry so they ordered both a salami pizza and an amatriciana spaghetti to share.

Actually we weren’t really impressed with the food. It was more fast food style pizza than traditional Italian. The sauce tasted sugary as if it was pre packaged and it was very oily. Something you’d want to get from a takeaway after a heavy night out. But not for a nice lunch.
Having said that, my pawrents ate the vast majority of the food so it wasn’t that bad. It just wasn’t really what they had expected. The total cost for the pizza, pasta and 2 soft drinks came to 600 baht / US$18. Which is actually pretty expensive. The view was nice but the actual restaurant furniture was a bit run down, the food not so great so didn’t feel it was worth that high price.
After we finished I got to take a short stroll along the beach which was nice.
Overall I’d give this place a 5/10. The fact that they didn’t seem so keen to see me, coupled with the not so great food and high price means I don’t think I’d rush back here again. The view is nice which is what saves the place, but could probably do with a bit of renovations. Never mind, there are plenty more pet friendly places to try. Take a look at some other options here.
Until next time, woof woof, Wylie x
