Hotel Kamenoi Shiobara is a pet friendly hotel in Japan. Located a short drive away from Nikko, it’s a great location for a short trip away from Tokyo. Kamenoi is a chain of hotels. So there are a few other pet friendly hotel options in other parts of Japan also.
We had enjoyed our stay in Nikko and wanted to stay for an extra night. However, the place we had stayed at earlier was fully booked. So we were pleased when we found Kamenoi had availability at the last minute. We booked direct on the hotel website and they had a special offer on pet fees. The usual pet fee is ¥3,300 (approx £16.50) but we got it reduced to ¥2,000 (approx £10). For that fee we got a small bag of snacks as well as some dog amenities in the room (water bowl, pee pads).
The Room
We chose a Japanese style tatami room, but they also had Western style rooms available as well. We like the Japanese style rooms as the futon’s are usually very comfortable and they are a different style for us to experience. In a Japanese style tatami room, you get your own futon’s which you must set up yourself when you are ready for sleeping. There’s also a table to sit around for relaxing. It’s also traditional Japanese style, for you to sit cross legged on the floor level.

For some reason, I loved sitting on the table. Maybe it’s because the snacks were kept there! The room had a private toilet but no shower or bathroom. That’s because the hotel had it’s own onsen, which is where you could shower.
In the room they had a small fridge, kettle with tea and coffee making facilities which we took advantage of. As well as some small snacks to welcome us.
One thing to note was that there are some rooms which are located directly above the machinery area. It was noted on the website, but we didn’t notice this as we had used Google translate and missed that part. It was very noisy in this room, so thankfully the hotel realised we made a mistake and moved us to a quieter room at no cost. Usually those rooms without the noise are more expensive. So something to take note of.
Hotel Facilities & Restaurant
The hotel had a lot of great facilities. As well as the onsen for the humans, there were 2 dog runs for me, 1 indoors and 1 outdoors which I had a lot of fun in. At the reception area there was an area with free flowing water for me and where the humans had access to free flowing wine as well. Which was much appreciated! Next to that they had both a souvenir shop for humans with lots of local snacks and treats to buy as well as a pet shop with local treats for me as well as pet toys.
The restaurant wasn’t fancy, it felt a bit more of a cafe style. However, included in the room rate we had a keiseki meal which is a set meal. The food was really delicious so we didn’t need to worry about the surroundings. Dogs are allowed in the restaurant and I sat with the humans at the table in my stroller which was really convenient.
They did have a dog menu which we were shown at check in. However, we didn’t realise we had to pre book it when we checked in. So we weren’t able to get the dog menu which was a shame as it looked yummy. I got to share some of the yummy dishes from the humans though so it was all good. Pretty much everyone in the hotel had a dog with them so it was really fun.
Conclusion
We had a great time at the pet friendly Hotel Kamenoi Shiobara. We would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a pet friendly hotel near Nikko.
