We chose to spend our winter holidays in Vietnam but are there any pet friendly places in Danang, our first stop? Before arriving we heard a lot of horror stories about poisoning and dog snatching so we were pretty guarded. We only spent 3 nights in Danang in total but we managed to find a few pet friendly places to go to.
Esco Beach
Esco Beach, is as the name suggests a beach bar right on the My Khe Beach in Danang. Pets are allowed as long as they are on a lead and held at the table. They have a couple of floors with seats on the terrace area overlooking the beach, indoors and some upstairs. The weather wasn’t great when we went so we sat indoors but still had a view out to the sea.
We had some early dinner of a mediterranean ciabatta sandwich and an avocado salad. Both options were really tasty. They have lots of options for drinks too with international beers and wine as well as cocktails. They had some live music with saxophone and bongos to give a great beach bar vibe. At 9:30pm they also had a fire show as well which was entertaining.
If you’re looking for a relaxed vibe to chill out it’s great during the day. On an evening it does get a bit more lively, especially at the weekends.

Highlands Coffee
Highlands Coffee are a large coffee chain in Vietnam. They have lots of different branches. Whilst dogs aren’t allowed inside, they almost all have outdoor seating areas where we sat at a couple of times. A great option for a quick coffee, breakfast or light snack. Don’t leave your dog alone outside though, as there’s a lot of reports of dog snatching. So only go here if there’s more than 1 of you who can go in to order while the other waits outside with the dog.

Altara Suites
We were originally planning to spend 2 weeks in Danang at Altara Suites. Altara Suites is a servied apartment block attached to the Four Points Sheraton Hotel. However, it’s completely separate. We booked our apartment through Air BnB and the host allowed us to stay with dogs. We encountered a number of other people staying/living with dogs in the building too. It’s in a great location, just across from the beach. There’s plenty of bars and restaurants within walking distance too.
Most of the photos on all of the listings we saw were renders and made the place look great. However, in reality the place is quite run down. The building is old, the lifts take forever (there’s no service lift so all service staff use them too) and the apartment we had needed maintenance.
Conclusion
We were very wary when we first arrived in Danang after hearing lots of stories about dog snatching and poisoning. We didn’t experience any of this, and we did see a number of street dogs around, which made us wonder how they survived if there was so much poisoning. Either way, we weren’t so comfortable and Wylie was kept on a very tight lead at all times or in his backpack. Having said that, the promenade along the beach is great for walking dogs and we found a couple of places we could go to with him. It’s a shame our Air BnB wasn’t so great so we didn’t get to experience more of Danang but we did enjoy our next stop, Hoi An.

Loved this post. Esco Beach sounds like the perfect stop after a walk along My Khe Beach, and the live music plus the 9:30 fire show is such a fun detail. The Highlands Coffee tip is also super useful, especially the reminder not to leave your dog outside alone while ordering. Sorry Altara Suites was a bit of a letdown, but it is still helpful to know it can be dog friendly through an Airbnb host. If you go back to Da Nang, did you find any other pet friendly cafes or hotels you would actually recommend, and did Hoi An feel easier with Wylie?
Personally, we wouldn’t go back to Vietnam with a dog. With all the stories we heard and our personal experience we just didn’t feel comfortable there. We were always on edge thinking he might pick up something from the floor or he might get snatched. So we couldn’t relax and ended up cutting our trip to Vietnam drastically short. We love Vietnam itself, but with a dog we didn’t feel comfortable. These are the places we found in Hoi An where we went https://wylietraveldog.com/pet-friendly-hoi-an/
