This week I got to stay at Supatra Hua Hin. Covid cases are increasing in Bangkok and restrictions are getting more strict. It was announced on Sunday that people would no longer be allowed to leave Bangkok starting Tuesday. We knew things would get worse, so we decided to leave Bangkok. We quickly hired a car, packed some essentials and hit the motorway to Hua Hin. As I’d already done my research on pet friendly hotels, I decided to book Supatra Hua Hin. It was a bit cheaper to book on Booking.com than the website as they had a weekend offer on. I paid 2,143 baht for 1 night in a Garden View room.
Roads were empty so the drive took us only 2.5 hours. We arrived around 9pm on Sunday night. The receptionist was waiting for us. I had previously messaged the hotel asking about pet policies and fees and I had added a note to my booking we had a small dog.
Pet Policy & Fee
Upon arrival we were asked to sign the Supatra Hua Hin pet policy form. This was the same form the GM had sent by e-mail when originally enquiring a while. As there was no mention of fees on the form, mammy had e-mailed and asked them to confirm that there were no fees to bring a dog. The response was that there was not. From reading my blog you will know how I feel about hotels charging for pets, so I was very happy with this. This was the main reason I chose this hotel over the many others. For me, no pet fee means the hotel is truly pet friendly.
Unfortunately I was charged 500 baht to stay. When mammy realised this she messaged the GM asking if it was a mistake. She was told no, there is a pet fee depending on the weight of the dog. She was pretty annoyed by this since she had checked in advance and there was no mention of any fee either by the GM or on the pet policy. As it was already late, we had no choice to pay this fee.
The amount is not that big, but we didn’t feel it was fair. Nothing was provided for the fee, no treats, no food, no dog bed. So I am not sure what the extra is for. This did put a dampner on the stay.
Room
We stayed in a garden view room. There are 2 garden view rooms in each block which can be joined together for families. There was one lounge sofa and another sofa area. I placed my bed at the end of the human bed and was very comfy for the evening. The room was very big with basic design. There was a shower and a separate sunken bath which reminded us of the Flinstones.
Common areas
One of the rules of the pet policy is that dogs cannot stay unattended in the room at any time. There is even a clause to say that dogs will be removed from the property with no liability to the hotel. I didn’t want to find out what that meant! That did mean that they allow dogs to go in all common areas including the restaurant. Unfortunately, the restaurant was not open for dinner, I assume because of covid so we had to go to a nearby restaurant to eat.
When we returned we took some beers to the sun loungers at the front of the pool area and enjoyed the cool breeze from the sea. There are plenty of leather beanbags and sunloungers so it was pretty comfy for me. There was a lovely view of the golden statue at the nearby Khao Takiab temple that was lit up and nice to look at.
Breakfast
We were the only people in the restuarant for breakfast. I am not sure if this was because the hotel was so quiet or other guests had already eaten. But it was good as it meant any nuisance I caused didn’t disturb anyone. It may sound like a great idea to be able to have your dog with you at breakfast. However, I hate to sit still. I can’t just sit in one place I like to be sniffing around. I also can’t be trusted on my own. Which makes it super hard for mammy to eat her food whilst making sure I sit still and not trying to grab her food.
I think in hindsight, it would be better to have chosen a hotel that doesn’t allow dogs in the restuarant but can leave in the room unattended. This would make for a much easier and peaceful breakfast.
The food itself was good. It was served a la carte and you could choose between a variety of eggs or boiled rice soup. The pawrents chose one set of fried eggs and a boiled soup with pork. Both came with tea or coffee, a juice and water. They also came with a small bread basket each with a croissant. You could order more drinks and more food too. In fact they tried hard to get us to eat more! The egss came with 2 sausages and 2 pieces of ham.
It was my lucky day as daddy wasn’t so hungry so guess what? I got to eat them all. Oh my goodness, they were so yummy, it was the best breakfast ever!
Run on the Beach
After such a big breakfast there was no choice but to run it off. Thankfully the hotel is directly on the beach. We walked down the steps and onto the incredibly sofy sandy beach. The tide was out so it was super huge. When we arrived it was high tide and the beach was super small. What a difference a night makes. There were some local longtail boats out on the beach. Nothing much else and no other people at all. We had the beach all to ourselves. I did see one dog snoozing next to one of the boats in the distance. But I kept away and so did he. I did get to see my first horse riding along the beach. Suffice to say, I have added one more item of dislikes to my ever growing list. I barked and barked until he galloped off into the distance. That was him told!
We were warned a number of times on check in that there are a lot of monkeys around in the morning so to be careful. I was super excited to hear there would be monkeys as I love chasing them. Mammy wasn’t so keen as they can be pretty aggressive. When reading about the temple, it also says there’s lots of monkeys around too. Thankfully, we didn’t see any at all so there were no fights with a monkey to be had.
Pool Time
After a long run I now needed some time to rest. So we headed to the pool area. Dogs are allowed there but not in the pool itself. That was OK as I hate swimming so I was fine to sit on the side. There are lots of beanbags around to sit on so I chose my favourite one and lay down to dry off.
Check Out
It wasn’t long before we had to check out at 12pm. Thankfully I was dry enough at this point so off we went. We paid the bill for the beers we had from the minibar in the room (75 baht per can)and off we went to out next stop. You can read more about my next stop soon.
Conclusion
Supatra Hua Hin is a reasonable hotel for a 3*. The rooms are a decent size, the breakfast was good and prices are low. However, there are definitely some areas that need some TLC such as the decking around the pool area that has seen better days. It’s a shame as they’ve had plenty of time during downtime of covid. I would have given a better rating had they not charged me a pet fee after saying there wasn’t one. I just can’t get over that. Mamma messaged the manager but she wasn’t apologetic at all. I really thought this was going to be a true pet friendly hotel but alas, it seems it is only the Ibis that fits the bill.
For a pet friendly hotel, overall I would give Supatra Hua Hin 20/30;
Room quality : 4/5
Price per night : 5/5
Breakfast : 5/5
Pet friendly areas : 5/5
Pets allowed to be left unattended in the room : 0/5
Pet fee charged : Yes but on the low side at 500 baht : 1/5
