Is Madrid pet friendly? We spent 3 nights in Madrid at the start of our winter Europe trip and we found that Madrid is very pet friendly.
Pet Friendly Taxi’s in Madrid
Our first port of call was to take a taxi from the airport to the hotel. We checked in advance and we found that all taxi’s from the airport will accept pets. Better still there’s no additional charge. When we arrived we headed to the taxi rank and the driver didn’t blink an eye when he saw we had a dog. I did stay in my carrier during the ride but the driver said it was fine if I wanted to be out. The fare is set from the airport to the city at €30 so you don’t have to be worried about being overcharged either. So it was a great start.
Pet Friendly Hotel Madrid
We stayed at Hard Rock Hotel in Madrid which is right in the centre of the city. Only a 5 minute walk from the train station also, it was super convenient. There is an additional €30 fee which is charged per stay, rather than per night, so it was well priced too. For that fee you got a dog bed, bowls for water & food as well as a bag of snacks. We also got a door hanger to hang on the door to inform the cleaning staff if I was inside.
Dogs are allowed in the lobby, the restaurant and the garden. You must remain on your lead though which is totally fine. All of the staff were really super friendly and we had a great stay.
Pet Friendly Restaurants Madrid
We weren’t really sure what to expect in terms of pet friendly restaurants in Madrid. We heard mixed reports about how pet friendly Spain is. On our previous trips we didn’t find it as pet friendly as other countries. However, we were very pleasantly surprised in Madrid. Every restaurant we went to allowed us to eat together.
The weather in Madrid in December was quite cold, but it was generally bright and sunny so it was possible to sit outside in many places. However, we did try a few restaurants to sit inside. Every time we asked at the door first, but everywhere we asked looked at us like we were crazy when we asked. Of course you’re welcome inside. So we got to try a number of lovely restaurants and had some yummy paella and tapas during our 3 night stay.
What we realised was a theme throughout Spain is that if dogs aren’t allowed then there will be a no dogs sign on the door. If they don’t have this sign, then you are legally allowed to go inside. We still always asked when we went inside if they didn’t have a sign. But we didn’t have anyone that turned us away.
Conclusion
We are pleased to conclude that we found Madrid to be very pet friendly! We had a great 3 days exploring the city together. Have you been to Madrid and how was your experience? Let us know in the comments below.
We look forward to exploring other parts of Spain and hope they will be as pet friendly as Madrid was.
