Exporting a Dog from Netherlands

Exporting a dog from Netherlands seems to be a relatively straight forward process. Amsterdam was one of the places I was possibly going to leave Europe from. So I contacted the NVWA in Netherlands to get the necessary information. I didn’t personally end up going through the process but hopefully it’s useful information for anyone looking.

The details below only apply to exporting outside of Europe. Since to leave Netherlands to other countries in Europe is easy with your EU Pet Passport. The exact requirements will of course vary depending on which country you will be visiting. The majority of requirements remain the same;

  • Must be microchipped
  • Have valid rabies vaccines
  • Up to date annual vaccines

Some countries also require a valid titer test. I always make sure mine is kept up to date, but if it is your first titer test, it can only be done 30 days after the initial rabies vaccine. Depending on your country of import you may then need to wait for a certain period of time before entering the country. This can be as long as 6 months after the titer test for countries such as Japan! So plan in advance.

Health Certificate

Most countries also require you to have a valid health certificate. Some will allow a certificate simply completed by an authorised vet. Others, such as Thailand, require this to be endorsed by the Government agency who overseas the import/export of animals. In Netherlands this is the NVWA.

You will need to vist a private vet to do the helath check on your dog. They will need to complete the health certificate here. This is a generic health certificate so if the country of import needs to include anything specific you may need to ask the vet to manually add this.

Endorsement

After the vet has completed the health certificate you must get it endorsed. You can make an appointment via e-mail nvwacoadierenpaspoort@nvwa.nl or call them on 088-2232100. Their office is in Utrecht. It is recommended that these are both done on the same day so plenty of planning to make sure both the vet and NVWA have appointments for you.

Let me know how you get on if you manage to export from Amsterdam. You can also check out my full details on importing a dog to Thailand here.
