Exporting a Dog from Japan

Exporting a dog from Japan is a pretty simple process. You must submit an export application form to the quarantine section of where you will be departing from. For us, this was Narita airport. This is the same place we arrived. So we sent the information to the same e-mail address, knowing they would be super helpful (aqs.nrtr1@maff.go.jp).

The export form can be found here and looks like this;

Required Documents

It’s very similar to all of the other forms from the import process so you should be familiar with them by now. Once you have completed the form, you must send this to the quarantine section with the following documents. The must be at LEAST 7 days before your flight;

  • Export application
  • Copy of vaccination record (including info page with name, microchip number)
  • Import certificate received when entering Japan
  • Any additional documents the importing country may require (eg health certificate)

We were flying to Korea so didn’t need any additional health certificates. However if you are travelling to EU or UK for example, you will need to bring with you the necessary forms filled out by your vet in order to get them endorsed before flying. Note* in order for them to provide you with the export certificate, you must hold a valid rabies vaccine.

As we would be coming back to Japan a couple of weeks later, we also submitted our import permit request at the same time.

Export Inspection

Before leaving the country you must do an export inspection. You can do this the day before your flight or on the day of your flight itself. If you leave it until the day of the flight you must arrive at least 3 hours before your departure time. The office at Narita is open from 08:30 – 16:30. So you may need to go the day before if your flight falls outside these hours. You must bring all original documents as well as your dog and your ID. They say the inspection should take between 30 minutes to 1 hour, giving you plenty of time to check in for your flight. Once the inspection is done you will get an export certificate and any endorsed health certificate you may require for your destination country.

My flight is in a couple of weeks time. Once I’ve actually done the export inspection I’ll let you know how it went! Any questions about exporting a dog from Japan just let me know in the comments below.
