Exporting a Dog from Germany

Exporting a dog from Germany is a relatively straight forward process. I originally contacted the vet at the airport as I thought they would be the most suitable. However, they told me to contact the Veterinäramt“ „Kreisverwaltungsreferat in the area that I lived. I therefore contacted the one in Munich since that would be where I am flying from.

Originally they advised me to contact the airport vet as I had mentioned I didn’t live in Munich. After clarifying that I had spent sufficient time in Europe, they confirmed that they would be able to provide the health certificate and endorsement for me.

The details below only apply to exporting outside of Europe. Since to leave Germany to other countries in Europe is easy with your EU Pet Passport. The exact requirements will of course vary depending on which country you will be visiting. The majority of requirements remain the same;

  • Must be microchipped
  • Have valid rabies vaccines
  • Up to date annual vaccines

Some countries also require a valid titer test. I always make sure mine is kept up to date, but if it is your first titer test, it can only be done 30 days after the initial rabies vaccine. Depending on your country of import you may then need to wait for a certain period of time before entering the country. This can be as long as 6 months after the titer test for countries such as Japan! So plan in advance.

Health Certificate

Most countries also require you to have a valid health certificate. Some will allow a certificate simply completed by an authorised vet. Others, such as Thailand, require this to be endorsed by the Government agency who overseas the import/export of animals.

Making an Appointment

In Munich, you must book an appointment with the Veterinäramt“ „Kreisverwaltungsreferat. You can make the appointment here. It’s only possible to book an appointment up to 2 months in advance. They weren’t super helpful to be honest and just told us to make sure we had the required documents and vaccines. Whereas other countries I’d enquired with had sent me all the requirements also. Anyway, mammy was pretty sure she had everything in place. Once I booked the appointment the e-mail confirmation had a link to the requirements, but the onus is on you to make sure you have the right papers for your destination.

Cost

The cost of the certificate is €8.50. It says that it can be produced on the same day as long as you have all papers in order. I booked my appointment for the day before my flight.

I hope this helps if you are planning exporting a dog from Germany. You can also check out how to import a dog in full to Thailand here. Have fun, woof woof, Wylie x
