I stopped off at Culloden Battlefield on my way from Loch Ness to Aviemore. We chose to drive up along Loch Ness into Inverness and then back to Aviemore. We felt this way would be more of a scenic drive even though it was a little bit longer.
One of my Instagram friends @the_edinburgh_westie lives up this way and I see he often goes to Culloden Battlefield for his walks. So I thought I would check it out and it gave me a good excuse to be able to stretch my legs and break up the journey.
On 16 April 1746, the final Jacobite Rising came to a brutal head. Jacobite supporters, seeking to restore the Stuart monarchy to the British thrones, gathered to fight the Duke of Cumberland’s government troops. It was the last pitched battle on British soil and, in less than an hour, around 1,500 men were slain – more than 1,000 of them Jacobites.
There is a visitors centre here that you can visit and learn more about the history. The cost to enter is £11 per adult or £27 for a family. We didn’t go in to the visitors centre. Instead we walked around the grounds which are huge!

We didn’t do a long walk here as it was really cold. It was the coldest I had felt on the whole of my trip actually! So after some photos and a short walk around, we hopped back in the car and continued the drive down to Aviemore.
